The Crime Number is...

Gorleston could feel hard done by at not getting anything from their trip to the league leaders.

There were three changes from the last match at Kirkley. David Shade was injured whilst Peter Lambert and Luke Goreham were unavailable. Goreham's suspension for the Kirkley red card begins in the Vase match against Kirkley.

In came Jackson Ramm, Ryan Fuller and there was a first start for Joe Norton.

Gorleston began well and forced a corner in the first minute which was punched clear. Stow responded with their own corner a minute later which ended with a shot going well over.

A Stow free kick was defended well and Fuller's long throw at the other end caused the home defence a few problems but it was Stowmarket who took the lead in the 16th minute.

A long ball down the Stow left saw Josh Mayhew get in front of the defender too easily, angling in on goal he shot across Tom Coombe into the far corner of the net.

The goal, however, sparked the Greens into life. Five minutes later they had their first shot on target but Fuller's effort was more like a back pass then Nelson Carinhas got a shot away under pressure but it was straight at the keeper.

The equaliser came in the 29th minute. Another Fuller long throw into the box saw keeper Callum Robinson come for it but Ross Gilfedder got in front of him to knock the ball down, back to Carinhas who lofted it back over the crowd of players and into the net for his first Gorleston goal.

Gorleston were the better side for the rest of the half and played some nice football with the quartet of Gilfedder, Fuller, Carinhas and Joel Watts giving the defence a lot of problems.

Unfortunately, the Greens couldn't score again before the break and, within five minutes of the second half, found themselves behind again.

This time a Stowmarket throw in was only half cleared out to Ollie Brown. His cross should have been dealt with but, instead of clearing the ball, the Greens tried to play their way out from the edge of the box and were caught in possession. Elliott Hannant then did try to put his foot through the ball but it bounced off Jordan Cantwell into the path of Ollie Canfer through on goal and he slotted in.

It got worse two minutes later.

The ball was harmlessly running out over the Gorleston dead ball line with Coombe shepherding it out. The ball crossed the line, then Mayhew dived over Coombe's outstretched arm with a yell. After thinking about it for several seconds, the referee blew and pointed to the spot.

All I will add is, Stowmarket supporters standing behind that goal who I spoke to said it wasn't a penalty.

Mayhew picked himself up to tuck the penalty away.

It got even more worse seven minutes after that.

The linesman missed a clear offside which infuriated Ramm. The referee took umbrage to Ramm's comments and showed him a straight red card, even though it could have been no worse than heard from numerous other players during the game . Ramm will now join Goreham on the suspended list for the Vase tie.

This virtually killed the Greens off and heads dropped.

Stowmarket looked to have secured the points in the 71st minute when Tom Matthews had plenty of space on the left, where Ramm probably would have been, his deep cross was turned into the net by Canfer about a foot from the line. He looked offside but apparently a defender had slid off the pitch behind the goal which played him on.

Gorleston pulled themselves together and almost immediately pulled a goal back.

It was a Fuller throw in again which was only half cleared. Gilfedder knocked the ball back to Watts who volleyed into the net.

Another Watts run saw him curl an effort over the bar before new signing from Harleston, Danny Camish, picked up a yellow card for allowing himself to be clattered by a big centre half. This was shortly after another mysterious yellow for Joe Norton.

Another Gorleston goal would make it interesting as Stowmarket were struggling to cope with the forward power of the ten man Greens but that goal arrived just a little too late in the 90th minute.

A poor defensive Stowmarket throw in saw them under pressure. Fuller pounced and squared to Gilfedder who made no mistake.

Gorleston did still have another chance to snatch an unlikely draw. A free kick 25 yards out was struck goalwards by Gilfedder but, just when it needed to be on target, the ball was overhit and went over and with it went the Greens chance of a point which was the least they deserved.

On this evidence the side is beginning to gel and it can only be a matter of time before the tide begins to turn.
