Wondering at Wanderers
Gorleston suffered their fourth defeat in a row as their end of season form threatens to take the gloss off what has been a good season overall.
The Greens would have been unchanged from their defeat to Mildenhall but plans were thrown into disarray minutes before kick off when Jack Garrod was injured in the warm up, meaning Connor Ingram had to replace him from the bench.
A lovely, sunny afternoon trip turned into a frustrating day for the travelling Greens fans, with those I spoke to left wondering where the flowing football of earlier in the season had gone to.
Connor Ingram charged down the home keeper's attempted clearance in the 11th minute but the goalie recovered to put the ball out for a corner.
After quarter an hour there was a warning for Gorleston as a deep free kick found Daniel Thrower at the back post but he headed wide.
Three minutes later Ipswich took the lead. The hosts found acres of space in the centre of the park and fed the ball wide to Kyron Andrews who had time to put in a cross that found the head of Thrower and this time the striker guided it into the net.
After half an hour Wanderers doubled their lead following a lovely move along the left flank. Paulo Coelho played a neat one two which put him through and he drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Gorleston had been having trouble finding Green shirts but began to find their passing game in the closing stages of the half.
Four minutes before the break Connor Ingram got in on the right and crossed low across the face of goal where Kyle Baker was waiting, but he scuffed the ball back across goal.
Minutes later Baker turned nicely into the box and this time got his shot away but it was straight at the keeper.
As the half ended, great work by Connor Ingram tight by the corner flag saw him pull the ball back to Joel Watts 12 yards out but the ball must have hit a divot as Watts shot went high over the bar.
Eight minutes into the second period Ipswich keeper James Bradbrook palmed a Connor Ingram corner off the head of Aaron Taylor as Taylor look poised to head goalwards. Isaac Burrage got on the end of the follow up corner but headed wide.
Then a Kyle Ingram 20 yard effort bounced awkwardly in front of the keeper. He could only parry back into the centre of the goal to Watts, following up, but the flag was quickly raised.
Then a lovely through ball from Baker picked out Watts but again his effort went over.
The second half had so far been better from Gorleston with a bit more determination about them and they were keeping the ball much better but finding it difficult to break down a stubborn defence.
It was the 75th minute before the hosts gained their first corner, although they should have had one a few minutes earlier, and the near post ball was turned wide.
Ricci Butler pushed George Yusuff up front with Ross Goodwin replacing Watts but the Greens still couldn't find the goal to get them back in the game.
The points were secured for Wanderers with a minute remaining.
A slip at the back allowed Thrower to pounce and go clean through, lifting the ball calmly over the advancing Taurean Molloy and into the net.
Gorleston had some final chances, Baker dragging a shot wide then Yusuff bringing a reaction save out of the keeper before turning another half chance wide but it wasn't to be.
The defeat had no effect on league position with Gorleston still needing 4 points to make sure of a top 4 finish, but the points won't be easy to come by with Hadleigh next up, who are fighting to stay out of the bottom three, then the Yarmouth derby, then another awayday to Haverhill Rovers. Just as worryingly is the fact the Greens have only scored one goal in the last four matches.
