No Eggstra Points at Easter

Gorleston succumbed to their fourth defeat in a row and must be wondering what they have to do to gain any more points this season.

The Greens made three changes from Saturday's game. Adam Plumstead was out so Reece Borrett came in at left back with Liam Brown switching to the right and Kyle Howell going in to centre half. Peter Lambert returned in place of Scott Woodgate. Meanwhile, Gorleston had their sixth keeper of the season in Alex Kibbey, who has been playing for UEA.

Almost immediately the Greens keeper was under pressure with a deep cross finding Ross Gilfedder who managed to divert the ball onto the post before it was scrambled away.

Gorleston got a foothold in the game and Bradley Hough had their first shot in anger after 15 minutes but the ball went over.

Three minutes later a free kick was awarded to the Greens 25 yards out. Keegan Middleton stepped up to curl the set piece goalwards, where it hit the post and rebounded back out, striking the goalkeeper, Luis Tibbles, and going for a corner.

From the corner Hough had an effort deflected wide before a Kirkley defender then tested his own keeper who saved again. Chris Sandford followed up with another effort which Tibbles clawed away.

Gorleston were having the better of it but did have a scramble in front of their own goal which Aaron Taylor and Howell eventually managed to clear.

Ten minutes before the break a Howell long throw saw Peter Lambert appear to be pushed over in the box, the ball fell to Nathan Russell who didn't get hold of the shot properly and it lifted into the keepers hands.

Kirkley did have the ball in the net six minutes before the break but the linesman's flag had long since been raised for offside.

Gorleston had been the better side but two goals in three minutes at the start of the second half put the visitors firmly into the driving seat.

Four minutes into the second period a long, straight ball over the top saw the Kirkley attacker easily outpace Borrett and gave him the chance to square across goal to give Gilfedder a tap in from a yard.

A minute later Gilfedder took on Taylor just inside the left side of the box and tempted the Greens defender into a challenge which left Gilfedder on the deck and the ref pointing to the spot. Miguel Lopez sent Kibbey the wrong way to double the lead.

Gorleston brought on Lee Roots and went three at the back with Kirkley looking long, early, to try and turn the Greens defence at every opportunity.

Russell had a long range effort that was easy for Tibbles before Ian Hunter drilled an effort wide at the other end.

Frustration then got the better of Keegan Middleton who picked up two yellow cards for dissent in the space of a minute and earnt himself an early shower.

The ten men kept going and a nice move saw Roots feed Sandford on the right, he pulled back to Russell who cut inside and curled an effort over.

A minute later Roots created another chance with a cross into the box that saw Lambert, despite being kicked and pulled, manage to divert the ball goalwards where it rebounded back off the bar.

Kibbey palmed a Gilfedder drive over the bar before a 90th minute Kirkley free kick evaded everybody striking the post and bouncing back into the keeper's arms.

Today's results mean both Diss Town and Ely City are relegated. The likelihood is that three teams will go down and Gorleston sit nine points above that final spot so, mathematically, they still need four points from their final four games to make sure they avoid the drop, assuming Wivenhoe win all their remaining games.
